Operationalising Human-Centric Digital Transformation: A Practical Implementation Framework for Sustainable Innovation in New Zealand Construction

This research project aims to develop and validate a practical implementation framework for human-centric digital transformation in New Zealand's construction industry through collaborative stakeholder engagement. While digital technologies offer significant potential for sustainable development in construction, implementation success rates remain low, with McKinsey reporting only 16% of transformations fully succeed.

Recent preliminary findings from qualitative research with construction organisational leaders have identified critical challenges and potential strategies in implementing digital initiatives that balance technological advancement with human factors. However, a significant gap exists between theoretical insights and practical implementation guidance that addresses industry-specific challenges.

This project will conduct an interdisciplinary focus group with diverse construction stakeholders to co-create and validate an implementation toolkit that bridges this gap in the New Zealand construction industry. The toolkit will feature practical resources including assessment templates, planning guides, and implementation checklists tailored to construction organisations' specific contexts and sustainability goals.

The project aligns perfectly with the Construction Innovation and Sustainable Development cluster's objectives by addressing both technological innovation and human factors essential for sustainable transformation. It recognises that effective digital transformation requires not only technological solutions but also careful consideration of organisational culture, workforce capabilities, and change management processes.
